My work is inspired by the Surrealist movement of the early 20th century. I started sketching three years ago as a form of therapy. One sketch a day. About a year into sketching I realized that even though every sketch was unique there was also a cohesiveness which is difficult to describe other than an aesthetic unique to me. I tinkered with watercolors and I then turned to oil paints. I continue to develop the technical craft in order to realize the ever present images that churn in my head. Capturing these images into a single frame to paint is difficult – like wrangling a bull. I often sit and day dream – watching the spectacles. The visualizations are sometimes abstract and other times contain more realistic components. The experience of hypnogogia produces the most interesting and complex scenes but is often difficult to recall if it’s not quickly sketched by forcing myself to wake up – a task at which I am not always successful.

My work is highly influenced by some of the first surrealist painters like Joan Miro, Giorgio De Chirco, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Salvador Dali, and Francis Bacon.
My intentions are to share the experience with others and prompt dialogue when possible about themes – especially philosophical or political in nature. The paintings are unique to my experience but they are reflections of the human condition that every individual can identify with.
As I develop my technical craft my work will include more and more realism and complex compositions which I’m currently not able to manifest today.
